The course at the Margate Country Club

The Margate Golf Club had a significant upgrade in 1995 under the guidance of Peter Matkovich which resulted in a course that is regarded as a great technical and tactical challenge for players of all levels.  The course is on open high ground and offers views of the surrounding countryside and the sea that is about three kilometers away.  You can expect lush tropical trees, undulating fairways and greens spotted with moonlike depressions here and there, devilish bunkers and various water hazards in the shape of streams, ponds and waterfalls.

The first and second fairways will mislead you into thinking this course is a breeze but from the third hole it only becomes more and more demanding forcing you to up your game.  Some of the unique features are the double greens at the par 5 9th and 18th that are particularly testing and the 6th and 13th holes that also sport double greens.  There are five par 3’s that are well regarded and scenic.  Keep a look out for the beautiful collection of exotic palm trees.

The 11th is the daunting signature hole of this course.  The elevated tee overlooks a ravine lined with banana trees and the small target beyond it is a green with swales all around it.  The challenge is to steer clear of being too short or too much to the right.

Keep an eye out for glimpses of the bucks grazing the fairways and also for the prolific birdlife enjoying the water features.  The 19th hole has the reputation of being the friendliest on the coast.
