The Course at the Port Shepstone Country Club

This is one of the most popular golf courses on the South Coast because of its picturesque setting, vibrant birds and wildlife, and unique challenges.  It regularly attracts players from all over to their tournaments. Located across the uMzimkhulu River from the town of Port Shepstone, the Country Club is a firmly established hub for sports, recreation, and community gatherings on the South Coast.

If you don’t know the course, you can easily be fooled into thinking you are in for a deceptively easy round of golf at first glance, but don’t make the mistake of underestimating the difficulty level.  On a windy day, the course rating can increase by two strokes!  You are in for an exciting round of golf from the mighty uMzimkhulu River that borders this course, wind from the seaside, mangroves, large trees, water features, bridges, and several new bunkers.

The first nine holes are framed by stately Indigenous trees, mangroves, and bush and are judged to be the most appealing section due to how scenic it is. The second nine holes are more like a links-type course. They are open and have several water hazards, but the real challenge is the wind.

At the Port Shepstone Golf Club, you can expect a well-maintained and stimulating course geared for regular competitions and championships. The facilities are excellent, and the views and wildlife provide a remarkable backdrop for an unforgettable round. Book in advance to ensure your tee-off time, as playing this course is an experience you don’t want to miss.

A Rich History

Established in 1912, Port Shepstone Country Club has been a cornerstone of the KZN South Coast community.  Initially starting as a modest 9-hole course, it has evolved into a premier golfing destination. The Club has weathered several significant floods throughout its history, most notably during the devastating floods of 1959 and, more recently, in 2022.  The uMzimkhulu River, which borders the golf course, has repeatedly breached its banks during extreme weather events. Transforming fairways into waterways and causing considerable damage to the club’s facilities.

A commemorative brass plaque on the clubhouse wall is a permanent reminder of nature’s power, marking the astonishing high water level reached during the 1959 floods. Club members and locals often point out this historical marker to visitors. They proudly tell stories of resilience as the community has repeatedly rallied to restore the beloved club after each flood.  The community’s response in 1959 was remarkable, with members, sponsors, and neighboring golf clubs rallying to restore the club. Interestingly, the club piano was washed out of the hall and eventually found on the Sea Park beach.

This collective effort is commemorated annually in May with the two-day Restoration Cup Competition, honoring the selfless heroism that helped re-establish the club. Despite these periodic challenges, the strategic location along the picturesque river remains one of the club’s most distinctive and cherished features, even if it occasionally demonstrates its formidable force.
