It is a very special experience when you are able to sit down for a yummy home made meal while looking down at the clouds below you hugging the sides of the magnificent Oribi Gorge.
The Leopard Rock Coffee Shop and Viewing Site is such a place and a ‘must visit’ when you visit the Oribi Gorge area. The air is fresh, the owners (Andries and Sue Bruwer) and their staff are very friendly and always over-deliver when looking after you. You might arrive there as a stranger, but you will leave feeling like a friend of their family.
It is 26 km from Port Shepstone and close to the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve and Lake Eland Game Reserve. The Coffee Shop/Restaurant is fully licensed, the food is ‘as good as mom’s or even better’ home-made fare and always freshly prepared.
They offer light snacks but also full meals. Don’t forget to try the delicious cream cake!
Leopard Rock Story & History
A Landmark with a Legendary Past
Leopard Rock has been part of KZN South Coast history since the early 1930s. Initially owned by Happy Day Tours from the 1930s to 1964, the property played a key role in introducing visitors to the dramatic landscapes of Oribi Gorge.
Guests would book guided tours from Margate and travel by “bread-box” bus along rugged dirt roads to the gorge. The highlight was a visit to the now-iconic overhanging rock, which extends approximately 2.5 metres over the gorge, offering breathtaking and slightly heart-stopping views.
Adding to the legend, tour groups were sometimes joined by Mr Clyde Sussens from the Nelspruit area, who travelled with his tame leopard, Suzie. Together they posed for unforgettable photographs on the rock. An original 1948 South Coast Herald article, still in their possession, documents these extraordinary moments and Leopard Rock’s role in South Coast tourism history.
Leopard Rock Viewing Site
Next to the Coffee Shop (to the left) is the well-known 2.5 meter Leopard Rock that jutts out from the side of the cliff, allowing for breathtaking views over the Oribi Gorge and the Umzimkulu River below. It is perfectly safe and didn’t feel scary at all when we were standing on it. Are you brave enough to try?
The garden around the Coffee Shop is a birdwatcher’s haven, with several feeding stations that also offer sweeping views of the Gorge.
