Amazing Shelly Beach on the KZN South Coast

Shelly Beach welcome sign

Shelly Beach is the perfect holiday destination in that it not only offers a top-notch ski boat harbor as a launching site to reach the Protea Banks, a world-renowned diving site, but that it also offers something that tends to be rare at such a destination: 2 huge shopping centers. Not to mention, a beautiful little beach with a large tidal pool and, arguably the best shell-collecting spot on the KZN South Coast!

Most seaside towns will be able to supply the average shopper with the basic necessities, but Shelly Beach caters to the discerning shopper in that it houses a good selection of specialty shops along with the usual national chain stores. You will also be able to catch the latest movie at the local cinema.

Shelly Beach is the launchpad for coastal adventures.  If you find your joy in deep-sea fishing, reef diving, surfing or just being on the open sea, this is the place to be.

Take a walk on the beach after high tide, and you might be lucky enough to find an interesting selection of mini shells with a hidden beauty among them. The Protea Banks, a reef about 7 kilometers offshore, is the origin of some of these beauties. Protea Banks is a world-renowned dive site off the KZN South Coast, famous for its thrilling shark dives and rich marine biodiversity. Definitely worth a dive if you have your ticket – or spend some time to qualify and then head out there to explore.  You will not be disappointed.

Shelly Beach, KwaZulu Natal’s fastest-developing town, also has the ‘Saints Walk’ which is a very scenic series of paths along the shoreline leading all the way down to Southbroom. You can expect to walk, run, or ride your bicycle alongside unspoiled beaches, tidal pools, and rocky outcrops while enjoying breathtaking views. Don’t forget to watch out for dolphins or whales playing in the water.

There are several diving and snorkeling sites, and the waves at ‘St Mikes,’ as the locals call St Michael’s-on-Sea, are a surfer’s paradise. If golfing is your sport of choice, you will be spoiled for choice among the great selection of challenging golf courses close by.
