The largest Snake Park in KZN, the Pure Venom Reptile Park is located in Izotsha, close to Shelly Beach, on picturesque grounds dwarfed by enormous wild olive trees that date back to the 1800’s. These entwining trees are magnificent and lend an interesting atmosphere to the place.

You’ll know you’ve arrived in a snake lover’s world when walking through the dramatic entrance that is a huge replica of the gaping mouth of a cobra. It is a bit disconcerting but also fun to look up at the huge fangs as you walk inside.

On the inside, you’ll find not only a large selection of snakes on display but also five species of crocodile, alligators, iguanas, lizards, birds and even a small farmyard with farm animals for the kids to pet.

The Viper restaurant serves breakfasts and light meals and there is also a Creepy Curio Shop if you fancy a souvenir.

The Pure Venom Reptile Park lays claim to being the biggest snake farm in Africa, and their amazing collection of snakes won’t disappoint. There is a large selection of South African snake species but also exotics from other countries on display. The nine species of rattlesnake, which is said to be the largest grouping of this species outside of the USA, are not to be missed.

Education:

Much focus and energy are placed on conservation and education by the owner, Terence Whittle (a well-known reptile expert), and his dedicated team. Their snake removal service has been a lifesaver for both humans and snakes in countless instances. Snakes that are caught are released back into nature or taken to their reptile sanctuary. If you are interested in educating yourself, there are courses with certification in snake handling and snake identification on offer.

To avoid disappointment, call beforehand to make sure of the times when guided tours, snake demonstrations, and feedings take place. It is a much more interesting experience if a guide is at hand.

There is a lived-in, even slightly neglected air to the place, but don’t be fooled by it. The animals are much loved, well taken care of, and in great condition. You’ll find that the staff are well informed and passionate about the reptiles.
