Golf at the Port Edward Country Club

The Course at the Port Edward Golf Club

The Port Edward Golf Club sits slap bang in the middle of a marvelous collection of renowned, up-market golf courses and is often overlooked because it is smaller and unassuming. Don’t make the mistake of ignoring it; it is a great, enjoyable alternative to the rest of the region’s elite clubs.

Add to that the warm welcome you’ll receive at the 19th hole and how kindly those who are still new to the game are treated, and you simply can’t go wrong.

The Course Challenge

This unpretentious course provides a stiff workout because of the hilly terrain that winds up and down hill without mercy, while offering little protection from the coastal winds that will wreak havoc on even the best-laid plans. It is always wise to check the latest Margate weather forecast before heading out, as the wind speed can drastically change your club selection. In the drier seasons, the greens and fairways can be hard-ish, but they are in superb nick during the rainy season.

Notable Holes

Four holes have water hazards and there is a sea view from basically every tee box. One of the most memorable holes is the par 4 first, which features water before the green, out of bounds on the left and right, and a bunker at the back left. At the par 3 straight downhill 5th hole, with a gorgeous view of the sea, the wind will often upset a seemingly easy shot. The par 5 6th hole is entirely uphill and will test your fitness levels. On the second shot, the out-of-bounds area on the right must be avoided at all costs.

A Social Finish

If the wind managed to upset your game, the welcome at the famously sociable 19th hole will more than make up for it and save the day. For those planning a full golfing tour of the region, we also recommend exploring all the amazing Things To Do on the KZN South Coast for a change of pace between rounds.  Don’t forget the fun Margate Nightlife and Margate Restaurants as well as a bit of Shopping at Shelly Beach!

Exploring the Area: Nature and Adventure

If you are visiting for the golf, it is well worth taking an extra day to explore the unique natural wonders located just a stone’s throw from the clubhouse. Most notably, you shouldn’t miss the Red Desert Nature Reserve. Known as the smallest desert in the world, it presents a striking contrast to the lush green fairways of the golf course. The vibrant crimson sands, which scientists believe were formed by the movement of ancient iron-rich soil, are surrounded by rare archaeological sites and indigenous flora. Walking through this “mini-Sahara” offers incredible photo opportunities and a fascinating look into the region’s geological history.

Just across the Umtamvuna River, you can find the Wild Coast Sun resort, which offers a broader range of family-friendly activities. If the hilly terrain of the golf course didn’t tire you out, the hiking trails at the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve offer breathtaking views of the river gorge and towering sandstone cliffs. This area is a biodiversity hotspot, famous for its rare plants and birdwatching. For those planning a full sightseeing tour of the region, we also recommend exploring the nearby Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve for more dramatic viewpoints and adventure sports like Ziplining across the Gorge.
